Your new dental implants could last for many years, or even a lifetime! But ensuring that they stand the test of time depends on a variety of factors, including how you use them, care for them, and what materials they’re made of. Here’s a closer look at the parts involved in your new prosthetics, and how long you can expect each one to help keep your smile looking and working its best!
How Long Do Dental Implants Last?
Each dental implant is made of three important parts: the implant posts, the abutments, and the teeth (which can be in the form of crowns, bridges, or dentures). Each piece has its own typical lifespan which varies depending on its materials and outside factors such as how well you care for it:
- Dental implants: Implant posts are made of either zirconia or titanium. Both metals are biocompatible and have a very high success rate; however, zirconia is a little less corrosion-resistant than titanium. Despite this minor difference, with proper care and use, both metals could last more than 30 years.
- Abutments: The abutment is what connects the prosthetic tooth to your dental implant post. They are made of the same metal as the implant, and are just as durable, but they are more likely to need replacement because they’re not fused with the bone and thus are less protected within the mouth.
- Crowns / Bridges/ Dentures: These are the teeth of your dental implants, and the easiest portion to damage. The good news is that they’re also the quickest and most affordable parts to replace. They can be made of acrylic or porcelain; however, porcelain is usually more durable.
How to Make Dental Implants Last
While it is extremely important to choose the highest quality materials for your dental implants, you’ll still need to take excellent care of them once they’re in your mouth. Here are a few guidelines to ensure they last as soon as possible:
- Brush your teeth (both real and prosthetic) twice a day and floss daily.
- Use a soft bristled toothbrush and non-abrasive toothbrush to prevent scratches.
- Visit the dentist every six months for your biannual exam and cleaning appointments.
- Never use your dental implants for anything but chewing on food.
- If you grind your teeth (bruxism) or play sports, speak to your dentist about a custom mouthguard.
- Never use tobacco products of any kind.
Remember, while your new dental implants are a permanent replacement for lost teeth, they’re only as long-lasting as you make them. Thus, be sure to only use them for food, avoid bad oral habits, and maintain excellent oral hygiene and you’ll be on the way to enjoying a lifetime of smiles!
