Fluoride is one of the most important things for protecting smiles from cavities. Not only is it used in products like mouthwash and toothpaste, but it can also be found in most tap water to help people fight off tooth decay. Even so, there\u2019s a lot of misinformation online that can lead to some confusion about fluoride. Read on as we bust some of these myths!<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Myth #1: Fluoride Is Dangerous for Children<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

So long as it is utilized as intended, fluoride is not considered a danger at all to children. Since fluoridated water dilutes the mineral, drinking it should only protect and strengthen teeth, as well as help prevent dental decay and tooth loss. Like most substances, fluoride is only a concern when it\u2019s taken in excessive amounts. Children would have to ingest about 10 times the amount from drinking water and toothpaste to see any problems. Many reported risks come from research done in underdeveloped regions where children were exposed to naturally high levels of fluoride in untreated water. The U.S., however, has much lower fluoride levels, and our water systems serve as a backstop for any contamination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Myth #2: Drinking Fluoridated Water Will Result in Fluorosis<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Fluorosis happens when someone consumes excessive amounts of fluoride, causing teeth to have brown or white spots. The United States only allows a certain level of this mineral to be added to drinking water, meaning there should be a very rare chance of this condition occurring. Even if a person experiences fluorosis, it is usually very mild and can be easily treated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Myth #3: Fluoridated Water Has No Impact on Dental Decay<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Throughout the U.S. and Europe, there have been many studies conducted that show how fluoride assists in minimizing the risk of dental decay. This is the case for both adults and children, as fluoridation helps the tooth enamel be more resistant to damage, causing bacteria to also have a more difficult time settling around a person\u2019s smile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Myth #4: Drinking Fluoridated Water Leads to Cancer<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Plenty of research and studies have shown that adding this mineral to water and oral products does not raise the risk of cancer. It also won\u2019t increase the chances of other serious health issues, including heart disease, diabetes, or kidney problems. Fluoride is even considered safe by the Institute of Medicine and the American Academy of Family Physicians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Myth #5: Fluoride in Toothpaste Makes Fluoridated Water Unnecessary<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Center of Disease Control and Prevention has stated that the amount of fluoridation in regular toothpaste isn\u2019t enough to fully protect teeth from decay. For optimal protection, people typically require a combination of toothpaste and fluoridated water, especially since many people only brush their teeth twice a day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
