{"id":321,"date":"2021-09-15T14:00:14","date_gmt":"2021-09-15T14:00:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dentist-tappan.com\/blog\/?p=321"},"modified":"2021-09-15T14:00:15","modified_gmt":"2021-09-15T14:00:15","slug":"mask-mouth-in-our-children","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dentist-tappan.com\/blog\/2021\/09\/15\/mask-mouth-in-our-children\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Mask mouth\u201d in our children."},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Coronavirus pandemic has helped coin a litany of new words and phrases; from social distancing to putting on the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/emergencies\/diseases\/novel-coronavirus-2019\">COVID-19 mask,<\/a>&nbsp;there\u2019s a new expression for almost everything related to the virus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One expression that we started using in our office is \u2018mask mouth.\u2019 The phrase refers to a range of symptoms associated with wearing a face mask around your mouth for long periods. It\u2019s not an official diagnosis, but it\u2019s become a common phrase used to describe the rise in dental problems that have resulted from increased mask-wearing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>In the States of New Jersey and New York, it is mandated that children wear masks indoors while in school.&nbsp; That can be up to 6 hours of mask wear for our children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We are seeing more children with gingivitis and cavities.&nbsp; This is due to the effects of continual mask-wearing which is keeping germs and bacteria in the mouth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When we breathe, (bacteria) leaves the system and dies, but with a mask, it\u2019s staying in.&nbsp; It\u2019s especially a problem for kids who aren\u2019t brushing well each day.&nbsp; The bacteria is just kind of hanging around the mouth.&nbsp; We are also experiencing some patients are experiencing the growth of that bacteria on the outside of their mouth and lips, caused by masks that keep \u201cmoistness and germs next to the face.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some solutions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1. Wear disposable masks<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2. If wearing cloth masks, wash them daily with soap and water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3. Brush your teeth before going to school, if possible after lunch and before going to bed.&nbsp; Also brush your tongue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>4. Rinse with Perioguard every morning before putting on the mask.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>5. Rinse with prescription strength flouride after brushing your teeth at night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>6. Avoid sugary drinks and drinks with low PH.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>7.
